Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

About the Discipline

Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies engineering physics, engineering mathematics and materials science principles to design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines.

About the Programme

The principles of Mechanical Engineering are employed in the design, study, development and construction of nearly all of the physical devices and systems. The curriculum for Diploma in Mechanical Engineering contains a variety of courses, viz. Manufacturing Process, Fluid Mechanics & Pneumatics, Metallurgy & Machine Tools, Automobile Engineering, Applied Mechanics and Strength of Materials, Thermal Engineering, Design of Machine Elements, Industrial Engineering, Power Plant Engineering, Hydraulic Machines, Advanced Production Processes, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, with an objective to expose the students to the various aspects of Mechanical Engineering. The courses are designed to encourage student-learning through various activities such as tutorials, assignments, projects and examinations. The project work is research and development based course, and involves analysis/design of a real-life problem of interest.

To enable the students for hands-on learning, various practical courses like Fluid Mechanics Lab, Heat Engines Lab, Material Testing Lab, CADD Lab, Industrial Maintenance and Servicing Laboratory, Hydraulic Machines and Fluid Power Lab, Advanced Machine Tool Laboratory, Machine Shop Practice, Workshop Practices are designed so as to allow students to apply the knowledge acquired through other learning processes. In-plant training and industrial visits helps the students to have exposure to state-of-the art technologies in industry.

Career Opportunities

Most of the middle level managerial jobs like supervisory positions in industries necessitate a qualification of Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. With their ability to identify and solve problems using a novel approach, Diploma holders in Mechanical Engineering have a wide range of employment opportunities with coordination responsibilities and diverse functions, mainly in the following contexts:

  • industries involved in the design, production, control and maintenance of mechanical components, equipment and systems
  • manufacturing and processing industries that use mechanical, metallurgical and electromechanical production systems
  • companies in the vehicle production sector
  • companies and public bodies in the energy conversion sector
  • contractors and companies that organize, manage and maintain plant and equipment for factories, buildings, handling and transport
  • service and industrial consultancy firms.

They will also be qualified to undertake free-lance professional activities in both design and industrial management consultancy.

Opportunities for Higher Studies

Diploma holders are eligible to appear for the JEE examination (IIT Entrance Examination). Students can seek admission to third semester of B.Tech Degree programmes in Aeronautical, Mechanical, Automobile, Production Engineering etc. through Lateral Entry Entrance (LET) Examination of Kerala State. This facility also exists in neighboring states. The major engineering colleges in the state offer B.Tech degree through part-time mode for those who possess a minimum of two years of working experience. Yet another option is to appear for the Associate Membership examination (AMIE) of Institution of Engineers (IE). AMIE is considered as equivalent to B.Tech degree for most purposes.
