Computer engineers are involved in many hardware and software aspects of computing, from the design of individual microcontrollers, microprocessors, personal computers, and supercomputers, to circuit design.

About the Programme

There is a huge gap between the demand for and supply of diploma level computer engineers. The curriculum of diploma programme in Computer Engineering aims to fill this gap to some extent by producing computer engineers who have a very good exposure to the core theory as well as latest trends and technologies in the discipline. The various areas addressed by the present curriculum includes the design of computers, learning of Programming Languages such as C, C++, Java, Python etc., Operating System and other system software, microprocessors and micro controllers, data communication and computer networks, design of application software, web design and development, study of computer hardware and networking, Database Management Systems, embedded systems, Android and smart device programming, Software Engineering and so on. In addition to the above, the curriculum also focuses on improving the interpersonal skills, environmental awareness and social commitment of the students through courses like health and physical education, life skills, environmental science etc.

Career Options

The diploma holders can pursue their career as Computer Engineers in national and multinational private sector establishments or in Govt. organizations. The major employment opportunities are as Programmers, Software professionals, System analysts and administrators, Hardware engineers, Web developers, Network engineers, Training professionals etc. They could also work as freelance computer professionals or could become entrepreneurs.

Opportunities for Higher Studies

There are ample opportunities to diploma holders for higher studies. They are eligible to appear for the JEE examination (IIT Entrance Examination). Students can seek admission to the third semester of B.Tech Degree course through Lateral Entry Entrance (LET) examination of Kerala state. This facility also exists in many neighboring states. The major engineering colleges in the state offer B.Tech degree through part-time mode for those who possess a minimum of two years of working experience. Yet another option is to appear for the Associate Membership examination (AMIE) of Institution of Engineers (IE). AMIE is considered as equivalent to B.Tech degree for most purposes. Further, they could become Internationally Certified computer professionals by successfully completing the courses offered by tech-giants like CISCO, Red Hat etc. in specific areas like Server administration, Network administration etc.
